The BOSS – Barrier On Strong Spikes – is a unique ISO 22343-1 certified system  suitable as both an anti-incursion measure for the highways industry and a robust security measure to protect crowded spaces for events. It is designed to bring vehicles to a controlled stop to protect people from harm.

Manufactured by Highway Care’s partner, Stuer-Egghe, and designed with advice and expertise from our technical team, this lightweight, surface-mounted Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) system offers an array of benefits.

Versatility for both highways and security deployments
Tested and rated
Speed and ease of installation and reconfiguration
Compact for ease of transportation and storage
Compact, lightweight design, with components weighing just 8kg each
Installation by a single operative within minutes, without the need for any special tools
Standard and upgraded configurations for different applications
Immobilisation of the vehicle threat

Opportunities for branding, wayfinding or colour co-ordination

The BOSS is ideal for use as an anti-incursion measure for the highways industry, protecting workers from the risk of vehicles entering the work area.

Used in combination with traffic management measures and signage, The BOSS will prevent both accidental and intentional incursions, while reducing any potential health and safety risks associated with vehicle impacts or impact debris.

When the BOSS is deployed as an anti-incursion measure, we recommend an upgraded configuration to prevent vehicular or pedestrian access to the work area.

The BOSS is an NPSA listed, robust hostile vehicle mitigation security measure that offers effective protection from vehicle attacks or errant drivers for crowded spaces or events.

The HVM system can be deployed in a pedestrian permeable standard configuration, enabling pedestrians to access the protected area while protecting it from vehicles with a chicane arrangement.

Alternatively, it can be deployed in an upgraded configuration to prevent all pedestrian or vehicular traffic.

Exceptional performance

The BOSS is capable of preventing vehicles weighing up to 7.5t from entering the protected area when travelling at speeds of up to 48kph (30mph). Unlike police stinger devices, which only puncture the tyres, allowing the vehicle to continue moving, The BOSS works by also inhibiting the vehicle’s wheels and axle, utilising the spikes to capture the wheels and prevent them from turning.

The system comprises a robust mat with the eponymous strong spikes pointing outwards, which brings the vehicle to a controlled stop without causing debris which could scatter to cause injuries. These spikes are concealed by 3D printed covers to protect pedestrians from injury.

What’s included in the BOSS?

Each complete, three-metre tested array consists of six strips with revolutionary stopping technology, along with two brandable tent covers, eight simple locking mechanisms, and three coupling plates.

For the upgraded configuration, an extension bar, additional tent cover and three further strips of spikes are required.

The 8kg components fit together to create a system with a total weight of less than 70kg and two storage compartments are also provided with the system for easy transportation. A single operative can install the protection in just a few minutes, transport it to site easily, and move or reconfigure The BOSS as required.
