This year, as part of our social value commitment, Highway Care has chosen to give every employee the opportunity to spend a day volunteering, fully paid by us. And we were delighted when our HSEQ Coordinator, Leah Murray, and our Customer Services Supervisor, Mél Tragner chose to spend their allocated day helping out at a local children’s hospice with our client Balfour Beatty M25 J10 project team.
Leah and Mél braved the April showers to paint fences at Christopher’s Shooting Star Children’s Hospice in Guildford, a brilliant facility that offers specialised care to children with life-limiting conditions and their families. The hard-working pair worked as a team to spruce up three fences, helping the hospice to save on maintenance costs so that more of the vital funds raised can be ploughed into providing care for children and their families instead.
It costs approximately £10 million to run the hospice each year, and with only 30% of funding provided by the government, donations of both time and money are vital for the hospice to continue doing its amazing work.
It was a busy day, but the Highway Care colleagues managed to take time out after their lunch break to tour the facility, meet some of the staff members and see first-hand how the funds raised are utilised. “We saw all areas, including the rooms where families are invited to stay and say goodbye to their children,” Mél commented. “It was an incredibly moving experience but reaffirmed the importance of the work that we and other volunteers were doing.”
